Biggar to Glasgow Green, People’s Palace – Distance 54 miles

Level of difficulty:

Mainly easy but with very hilly stretch between Lanark and Larkhall.

Maximum riders: 8 plus 2 leaders. Pre-registration is essential. 

Timing

Estimated duration: 8 hours’ cycling at average moving  speed of 10 mph, plus stops (2 stops of approx 30 minutes plus a few shorter stops): total 9 hours.

Start point – Biggar Corn Exchange

Please arrive at starting point by 08:30 for photos and briefing.

Departure time 9:00 sharp – it’s quite a long stretch!

Getting to the start:

Biggar is reachable by car only. [Parking info to follow]. Riders will need to make arrangements for lifts/car transport if they wish to join the ride at Biggar.

31 miles – Merryton train station – 23 miles to Glasgow (joining at this point cuts out the difficult hilly stretch between Lanark and Larkhall)

44 miles – Newton train station – 10 miles to Glasgow

11 miles – Carstairs – 43 miles to Glasgow

Small supermarket and café. [check re WC if café closed]

16.5 miles – Lanark– 37 miles to Glasgow

Morrisons café or the fish+chip shop adjacent to Morrisons, close to the train station

22 miles – Crossford – 32 miles to Glasgow

Small supermarket with coffee machine and a few outdoor tables.

31 miles – Merryton train station – 23 miles to Glasgow

33 miles – Chatelherault Park – 21 miles to Glasgow

Slight detour from marked route needed to reach the café and WC facilities, but excellent picnic spot.

44 miles – Newton train station – 10 miles to Glasgow

Quite a lot of this stage is on the road, with traffic.  There are a large number of junctions and road crossings where the safer option is to walk across.
