Daventry to Birmingham – 47 miles
Tuesday 9th July
The route starts at Leisure Lakes Cycles in Daventry at 09:00.
Level of difficulty: Moderate
The morning ride will be 45km / 28 miles. After 2km cycling in town we leave Daventry on the A45 which is mainly downhill then flat [often used by the local cycle club for time trials]. At the 8km mark we cycle on quiet country lanes in Warwickshire, until we reach New Cubbington at about 32km. This is about 4km from Leamington train station, but we will avoid the town.
We skirt the edge of Kenilworth, which also has a train station, and at 41km join a greenway which is on a disused railway line so nice and flat. there is now an easy 4km until lunch at the Hickory Smokehouse, 216 Cromwell Lane,Burton’s Green, on the outskirts of Coventry. Loads of parking. Tile Hill station is about 1 mile away, on the main London-Birmingham line so easy for joining or departing cyclists. Total cycling to this stage is 45km/28 miles, with 300m of elevation gain and loss – so overall gently rolling and easy. No scary hills!
The second section is 30km / 19 miles into Birmingham, final point to be confirmed. This is even flatter – overall 120m of gain and loss in height, and where possible avoiding busy roads. The first 13km is still surprisingly rural with lanes and villages, until we get to the village of Catherine De Barnes near Solihull.
At the 15km mark we join the towpath of the Grand Union Canal for almost all ofthe rest of the ride. This is the route recommended by Cycle Travel Birmingham. At the 28km mark we leave the canal and are on city centre roads, but only for 2km. We finish at Caroline Point and the FFT offices in Birmingham.
